This week we are going to do something a little different with the usual teaser image. Today we provide three images of the same scene… a full visible image, a full AutoBlended image, and a full infrared image. Take a look at these closely. Notice that there are some things in the visible image that are NOT in the infrared. Our question this week is not “What is it?”. Instead, we want to know “Why do our eyes tell us one thing, and the thermal imager tells us something else?” We will not be providing the answer for this until August 16th, so think about it, research it if you wish, and give us your best explanation!
Take your time this week to leave your guesses in the comments section below. Be sure to come back next Tuesday for the answer. Challenge your friends on facebook and twitter by sharing with the buttons below!

The image shows the heat radiating from a roman bath house / steam rooms.
Well, since no one else seems to be taking up the subject…
My guess is because a thermal imager records the infra-red radiation that is emitted from objects, it will not pick up clouds. Since clouds are composed of water vapor, the vapor will reflect the majority of the sunshine that hits it, and will not be warmer than ambient temperature. Of course this alleged reflection will be in the up direction.
Notice how the infrared image does not appear to be picking up the visible features on the wall of the building to the left… such as windows, architectural decorations, etc. Yet… it is able to distinguish these features on the church and tower just beyond. Why?
I guess the isolation of the church is not that good…
I’m stumped. can’t wait to hear the answer. maybe the windows are painted on. that’s the best i can come up with.
My guess is that the building on the left isn’t really a building. The building is covered with scaffolding and a fabric screen painted to look like the building. You can see the top of the scaffolding at the top right of the screen.
I agree with Ken, this look like a screen that look like a building. It would also explain the Yellow lines on the image, maybe scaffold piping.
I first thought that the horizontal yellow lines might be from lead wall flashing radiating heat through the screen. However, since there is no line between what appear to be the third and fourth floors, I’ll bet they are scaffold walk boards in contact with the painted screen.
In China, especially in this way that you need someone to spread the use of infrared thermal imaging and transmission of knowledge,Thanks Michael Stuart!
